Most people hear the word health and automatically think of physical health, but this is just one form of health. While I am certain that others could be added to this list, here are just a few that I can think of:
- Physical
- Mental
- Spiritual
- Emotional
- Relational
- Professional
The point I want to make is that each of these, when out of sync, affect one or more of the other areas. Personally, I feel like I am constantly trying to improve one of them while still trying to find or maintain a balance among the others. My physical health seems to be where I see and feel the effects the most. Then you add my aging body and somedays I feel very out of whack.
Currently, my hubby and I are working on our physical health. We are working on eating better and moving our bodies more. One of the things we choose to do is to workout at the gym together 3 times a week. This not only helps us physically, but it also helps us relationally by doing it together. We can hold each other accountable and spend a bit more time together. We have a common goal to talk about and work on together. That goal is to have a healthier body, one that feels better and aches less (well, aching less is my hope).
For me, there is also an emotional and mental boost. A simple walk helps me to release some of my stress and process my thoughts, especially when I add prayer to it. Walks and working out are not new to either of us. Just a few years ago we were both very active. We let life get in the way and began to pay less attention to our health until lately. Achy joints, excess weight, and lab results gave us an excellent reason to reevaluate our lifestyle.
This is a day-to-day and sometimes moment-to-moment choice we need to make, both as individuals and as a couple. We can not force the other one to choose the healthier way, but we can encourage and support each other in our efforts.
All aspects of my health are part of my everyday life. Trying to find the best balance is a continuing goal. Thankfully, it is a goal I share with my hubby. Though it doesn’t look like it used to, we can begin this revised path of our journey together. This is us!
Blessings,
Kathryn
