This is weekend we celebrate our nation’s 250th birthday. Different families celebrate this event in a variety of ways. Some go full out and participate in parades and local celebrations. Others may elect to spend time in the backyard, at a lake or campground celebrating with friends and family, enjoying games, grilling, s’mores and just hanging out. Most probably watch fireworks somewhere, even if it is at home on the television.
The fireworks, the climax to the weekend, can also be the biggest problem. Safety is a huge concern. Please follow directions if setting off fireworks yourself and have a fire extinguisher handy. Always keep little kids, pets, and anyone under the influence away from all fireworks, lighters, and such. There will be some people that use fireworks to pull pranks on friends or challenge them to dangerous dares. Don’t be one of those people.
Another thing to keep in mind is your fellow human and fur baby. Many people struggle with PTSD of varying degrees, and fireworks can be a trigger. There are pets and small children that are unable to tolerate the loud noises of fireworks. I remember one event when I was younger when my family thought it would be neat to sit in the front row at a ball field to get the best view. I hated it because it hurt my ears. I did not want to be there and missed most of them because my head was buried in my mom’s side. So, please be courteous and safe this holiday weekend.
As for me and my hubby, we will be away for a much-needed mini vacation. It is the first time in a long time that we have gone away without it being some type of conference, convention, or race. This is just the two of us hanging out, away from home, and watching our beloved Orioles together. I am really looking forward to it. Side note to my writing friends, I will, of course, have my trusty notebook and pen handy for words that may come as my mind relaxes.
Blessings for a safe and fun Independence Day weekend!
Kathryn
